But a few weeks later, she dropped by my office after a visit to the passport office: “You wouldn’t believe how much better he is. You know what? So when they control the depression, the patient not only cheers up, but gets better.”

“That’s great.”

“He’ll need a professional care-giver at some point, but for right now all he needs is a pushy roommate. The doctors say he should be fine for a short trip.”

“You won’t be able to make it around the world, I guess.”

“Murray says he can live with that. He said he heard Europe has all the charm of yesteryear. And he smiled when he said it.”

I admired his courage. I thought most people, in a similar cul-de-sac, wouldn’t be nearly so cheerful.
